
Throughout his career, Babcock has spoken
regularly in a variety of forums. While serving as president of
the Denver Nuggets, he was asked by then Governor Roy Romer to travel
the state and speak on behalf of the Governor's program, "Communities
for a Drug-Free Colorado".
The business community in Denver sought his support in speaking
on behalf of the "Colorado Proud" initiative and the economic
impact of building a new airport for the
metro Denver area. The Mayor's office asked for Babcock's help in
promoting the importance of physical fitness for the youth of Denver
and Babcock created a program to reduce gang violence within the
city.
As general manager of the Atlanta Hawks, he spoke on behalf of gun
buy-back programs, annually addressed groups on the importance of
the study of Black history, established a male-mentoring program
with inner-city grade schools and conducted monthly success seminars
with at-risk students at local high schools. This resulting in his
being awarded the prestigious"Golden Apple Award" from
the Atlanta Public Schools.
The Turner Broadcasting System has repeatedly asked him to speak
to employee groups and divisions as a motivational speaker focusing
on maximizing one's potential and United Way requested his assistance
in speaking to numerous businesses and corporations to help raise
contributions. He was selected as Sports Personality of the Year
by Special Olympics not only for his volunteer work, but for his
speaking on behalf of supporting Special Olympics.
